ABOUT OUR CHAPTERBrooklyn Chapter, NSDAR, was organized March 2, 2005, and was named for the historic Battle of Brooklyn, the largest battle of the American Revolution and the first to be fought after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The battle took place August 27, 1776 on the grounds of the Old Stone House and Green-Wood Cemetery. Our name honors the more than 2,000 patriots who were captured, wounded, or lost their lives to the British forces that day.
Our members live in neighborhoods throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan. Founded with working women in mind, the chapter meets on weekday evenings, October through May, and provides leadership opportunities to Juniors (women under the age of 35) whenever possible. We actively welcome prospective and new members to attend! Our chapter participates in a number of local events including the Battle of Brooklyn commemoration at Green-Wood Cemetery, the NYC Veteran's Day Parade, Flag Day and Memorial Day commemorations, Wreaths Across America, and local naturalization ceremonies. We award JROTC medals, fundraise for wounded veterans, and host an annual trivia fundraiser in support of America’s VetDogs. Members volunteer their time at the Brooklyn VA, soup kitchens, and women's shelters; index and archive historical records; and participate in conservation activities throughout the borough. We have also recently partnered with Old New Utrecht Cemetery in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, to mark the graves of a number of Revolutionary War Patriots who are buried on their historic grounds which date back to the 1600s. Brooklyn Chapter, NSDAR, is represented at the annual NSDAR Continental Congress in Washington, DC, and at the annual New York State Conference. A number of our members have completed nationally-recognized leadership and genealogy training and have also been honored at the national level for their outstanding achievements and contributions.
